If you decide to get a hamster
First of all you should decide what you want from the communication with hamsters.
If you want to have only one hamster as a pet, you can choose any hamster that you can find in special pet shops.
If you want to have a few hamsters not for breeding but just as pets, then you must know that Syrian, Jungar and Campbell hamsters are solitary animals. It is not bad to keep the only rodent in the cage, it is bad when there are several animals in one “house”.
If the hamsters of mentioned kinds live together in 90-95% of cases it ends tragically, because they start to fight for territory to the death of the one animal. Syrian (golden) hamsters may be longhaired and shorthaired. The other names of Syrian hamster are Golden Hamster, Fancy Hamster, Teddybear Hamster, Standard Hamster. They are the largest domestic hamsters. They are not suitable as toys for young children. You may optimally get this hamster for a child from 9-10 years old. Syrian hamsters are sociable with the owner, but not with each other.
You need a cage with area at least 50 x 30 cm for each Syrian hamster and 18 cm - diameter wheel with a solid running surface. Tamed Syrian hamsters are very affectionate and friendly, you may play with your hamster for a long time, holding it in your arms or watching on the couch. Life expectancy of Syrian hamsters is about two years.
